COPUS seeks organizations to join coalition; establishes 2009 as Year of Science

Washington, DC. The Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) is a grassroots effort linking universities, scientific societies, science advocacy groups, science media, science educators, businesses, and industry in a consortium having as its goal a greater public understanding of the nature of science and its value to society. This is an essential step in re-establishing the nation’s leadership role in the national and global scientific enterprise. It is critical to ensuring the long-term social well-being of the American people.

COPUS is currently seeking participation from organizations and groups. As part of COPUS, an organization will become part of a national network sharing resources and leveraging efforts. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with others to promote common goals and develop joint strategies to improve the public understanding of science. Organizations can join online at the COPUS web site http://www.copusproject.org.

One of COPUS’ projects is to support a national effort to promote the public understanding of science in a year-long celebration - the Year of Science 2009. This national celebration of science hopes to engage the public in science and improve public understanding about the nature and processes of science. Organizations are invited to participate in this event and they can sign up at the Year of Science 2009 web site at http://www.yearofscience2009.org/ or at the COPUS web site.

The COPUS national office is located in Washington DC, hosted by the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). For further information on COPUS, contact:
